Where to Go When You Gotta Go: Bathroom Options for Every Camper

One of the most common (and most important) questions is how to manage bathroom needs when camping in a PinDrop™ Travel Trailer. While we understand that this can be an awkward topic, it’s important to know the options—especially since PinDrop™ trailers , like all teardrops, do not have an onboard bathroom.

Whether you’re staying at an established campground or heading off-grid to a remote destination, there are a variety of ways to handle nature’s call. Here are a few practical solutions, including the most popular options used by our customers and by the PinDrop™ Team.

Established Campgrounds: Use What’s Provided

This one is obvious. If you're camping at an established campground, you’ll likely have access to bathrooms or pit toilets. Most campgrounds provide flush toilets or, at the very least, vault toilets. While not glamorous, these are reliable options that take away the hassle of having to manage waste disposal on your own.

For those exploring our beautiful state or national parks across the country, these campgrounds often offer clean, fully furnished bathroom facilities with running water, flush toilets, and even in some cases hot showers—providing a touch of comfort during your outdoor adventures in a PinDrop™.

Leave No Trace: A Shovel and the Wilderness

For the more adventurous and eco-conscious campers, the Leave No Trace method is the best option when established facilities are not available. Bring a small shovel, dig a "cat hole" at least 6-8 inches deep, and bury your waste away from water sources. Make sure to follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize your environmental impact. This method is popular and adopted as best practice for all remote, off-grid areas where bathroom facilities aren’t available.

Composting Toilets: Eco-Friendly and Portable

A composting toilet like the Nature's Head is a great option for those who

want an eco-friendly, portable solution. (This is what PinDrop™ founders Tim and Ruth Ellen use for extended off grid adventures in their PinDrop™.) This method (which has been thoroughly researched and studied) separates liquid and solid waste, allowing the solid waste to naturally compost. It’s a favorite among off-grid campers and the unit can be easily transported.

Users will need to empty and manage the waste periodically when planning longer trips.

The Boxio is another, much more compact alternative which also offers an environmentally friendly, compact, and easy to store option. This product is particularly practical due to

the BOX format, which can be conveniently stacked, easily transported, and can stealthily double as a camp chair, because it does not resemble a conventional toilet. Produced with recycled materials, Boxio brand is a great way to support a low impact and environmentally concious design, in line with PinDrop™ company core values. Like other high end composting toilet brands, the Boxio also separates liquids from solids and offers an odorless alternative to waste disposal. Liners, disposable and compostable, must be purchased from Boxio.

Portable Flush Toilets: A Little Luxury in the Wilderness

Portable flush toilets, like the Thetford Porta Potti or Camco Portable Toilet, are self-contained units with a fresh water tank for flushing and a separate waste tank. These portable toilets offer a more traditional bathroom experience, giving you the comfort of flushing while out in nature. Waste is stored in the unit and can be emptied at RV dump stations or campgrounds equipped with waste disposal facilities.

Bucket Toilets: Simple and Budget-Friendly

For those seeking a low-cost, no-fuss option, a bucket toilet system can be a simple and effective solution. These systems typically consist of a 5-gallon bucket fitted with a toilet seat lid. You can line the bucket with biodegradable bags, use absorbent materials like sawdust or Poo Powder after each use, and tie up the bag for later disposal. It’s easy, affordable, and perfect for campers who want to keep things straightforward.

WAG Bags: Pack It In, Pack It Out

For campers who prefer to pack light and stay mobile, WAG Bags (Waste Alleviation and Gelling Bags) offer a great alternative. These single-use bags contain a special gel that solidifies waste, neutralizing odor and making it safe for disposal in the trash. WAG Bags are compact, easy to use, and perfect for Leave No Trace enthusiasts who want a quick and clean way to handle waste.

Pop-Up Privacy Tents For ANY "Gotta Go" Option

If privacy is preferred even when you are remote and off grid or if camping

with a group, consider investing in a pop-up privacy tent. These compact, portable tents are quick to set up and provide a secluded space for using a portable toilet or bucket system. Some privacy tents even come with an attachment for solar showers, allowing you to handle all your hygiene needs in one place. One of the remarkable features of a PinDrop™ is the 10-gallon solar shower tank with attachable shower wand and hose that easily extend into the top of the privacy tent. PinDrop™ has both a water heater and air compressor which create an even more luxurious shower experience in the great outdoors.

Bathroom Options for Every Camper

No matter where your PinDrop™ Travel Trailer takes you—whether it’s an established campground with full amenities or a remote, off-grid destination—there’s a bathroom solution that fits your camping style.

From composting toilets to simple shovels, it’s all about finding what works best for your needs while maintaining respect for the environment. So, when you're planning your next camping adventure, consider which bathroom option aligns with your travel lifestyle, and..... always be prepared.

Happy camping with bathroom options for every camper.
