Meet Scott Hathcock, CEO Moonshot - Empowering Entrepreneurship in Rural Arizona

It's been over a year since PinDrop™ Founder, Tim Elinski, competed against 9 other Arizona-based businesses for the Moonshot Rural Pitch Tour final state-wide competition where he pitched PinDrop expansion plans and ultimately took home the first place grand prize.

Supporting Founders in Rural Arizona

This memorable and impactful experience competing among other Arizona-led enterprises and some of the most innovative founders across rural Arizona resulted in new relationships, new partners, educational opportunities, expert consult, and a boost in confidence for the PinDrop™ team. Now, looking back it seems relevant to chat more with Moonshot CEO Scott Hathcock about Moonshot as an organization, what is trending, and how his work continues in supporting entrepreneurs by working to build stronger rural economies.

We chatted with Scott about all things Moonshot, his work, his mission, and what drives him in supporting and encouraging some of rural Arizona's best and brightest businesses and start-ups.

Interview with Scott Hathcock, CEO Moonshot.

How do you describe what your organization does in just a few sentences?

Moonshot is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation across Arizona, with a particular focus on rural communities. We provide resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities to help small businesses and startups overcome obstacles, grow, and succeed in today's competitive landscape.

Why are you motivated to support small businesses?

We believe small businesses are the backbone of our economy, particularly in rural areas where they serve as vital community pillars. Our motivation stems from a commitment to empowering entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to turn their innovative ideas into successful enterprises, ultimately contributing to the economic vitality and sustainability of their communities.

Tell us how the name Moonshot came to be?

The name "Moonshot" is a tribute to Flagstaff's significant role in the Apollo missions, where all the astronauts trained for their historic journeys to the moon. Just as Flagstaff served as a training ground for reaching new heights in space, Moonshot aims to empower entrepreneurs to reach new heights in their ventures. Our name reflects the spirit of aiming for the extraordinary, inspired by the same pioneering spirit that helped put astronauts on the moon. We encourage entrepreneurs to pursue ambitious goals and provide the support necessary to turn their bold ideas into reality.

What are a few surprising experiences or outcomes from working in rural Arizona?

One surprising outcome is the incredible diversity of entrepreneurial ideas that emerge from rural Arizona. Despite limited resources, these communities are brimming with creativity and innovation. Another surprising experience has been witnessing the deep-rooted commitment of rural entrepreneurs to not only build businesses but also to enhance and give back to their communities, for example Pin Drop Travel Trailers.

What inspired you to start the rural AZ pitch tour?

The Rural AZ Pitch Tour was inspired by the need to bring attention and resources to often overlooked rural entrepreneurs. We wanted to create a platform that would allow these entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas, receive feedback from industry experts, and gain access to the capital and networks necessary for success. It's one way we’re bridging the gap between urban and rural business opportunities.

What are your goals or how do you see this program taking its next step?

Our goal is to expand the reach of the Rural AZ Pitch Tour, making it accessible to even more communities across Arizona. We envision incorporating more tailored mentorship programs, increasing funding opportunities, and creating partnerships with larger corporations that can provide additional resources and market access to these rural businesses.

What stands out as unique challenges for rural businesses that you haven’t seen in more urban-based businesses?

Rural businesses often face challenges such as limited access to high-speed internet, fewer networking opportunities, and difficulties in accessing capital. These challenges can create significant barriers to growth and sustainability, which is why Moonshot is committed to providing targeted support to help overcome them.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

We are constantly inspired by the resilience and innovation of the entrepreneurs we work with. At Moonshot, we believe that with the right support, any entrepreneur can achieve their "moonshot" – a transformative impact on their community and beyond. We are excited about the future and are committed to continuing our mission of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation across Arizona.
